Remote Area Medicine, RCS Ed
Description
This course has been developed for any medical professional who works in or wants to work within remote areas or planning an expedition across the globe. We have a team of professionals who have focused the delivery of this course to all aspects of clinical care that may present particular challenges in such conditions. Our team of tutors include doctors, paramedics, military personnel and nurses who all have extensive experience in various terrains across the world. These include hostile locations, arctic circle, search and rescue teams and mountainous areas.
Students need to expect to work in a variety of conditions during the programme including water, woods, fells, caves, cliff faces etc as well as night exercises.
Our course comes with an approval from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.

Syllabus
The course content for the remote and expedition course is comprehensive and covers the following:
Clinical scope of practice
Preparations and role of medical officer
Food, water, fire and hygiene
Triage and crisis management
Working with helicopters and fixed wing
Patient assessment and diagnosis
Airway management (i-gel, LMS, intubation and emergency airway)
Chest drain insertion
Chest and abdominal trauma
Shock, haemorrhage control (tourniquets, celox, quick clot) and fluids
Fracture management and various splints including dislocation reduction
Skin issues and closure techniques
Head, neck, eye and dental issues
Medical emergencies
Catheterisation
Minor limb and back issues
ALS
Diseases
Animals and plants
Extremes of weathers
Altitude and mountains
Drugs and pharmacology issues
Certification
After completing both theory and practical assessment a certificate will be awarded from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
Pre-Course Requirements
Student must have previous medical experience before commencing this course. These include CMT, Offhsore Medic, Paramedic, RGN, Doctor

This course is held in Stokesley, North Yorkshire which is in North East England.
