Clinical Governance is a system for improving standards of clinical practise. It was initially developed within the NHS as a response to the Bristol babies scandal in 1995, where the high mortality rate of cardiac surgery was exposed.  Today, measures of clinical governance are widely used throughout the NHS and other medical care providers, as a way of evaluating and striving for excellent patient care.

A system of ‘Clinical Governance’ is not necessarily delivered in a set and uniformed way, how it is achieved can vary from practise area to practise area; however, generally the principals of clinical governance are:

Education
Clinical audit
Clinical effectiveness
Risk management
Research and development
Openness

When put together these aspects allow a service to monitor and examine their care provision to their patients, meaning that any problems are tackled swiftly before great harm is done.

Developing a clinical governance structure within your service or business allows you to have confidence in the care that you provide. It will assure you that your practises are effective, necessary and clinically sound.
